If you want faster data in 2022 and live in one of the initial C-band markets, get a C-band phone.

T-Mobile phones and unlocked-only phones are less likely to support C-band. Most 5G phones released on Verizon and AT&T in 2021 should have C-band support.

The iPhone 12 series were the first US phones certified for C-Band, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, the Google Pixel 5, and the LG Wing. The iPhone 12 family are the first phones approved by the FCC for C-band. That would open up a potential wider range of phones, as more phones currently have n78 than n77. If a carrier only wins segments within the n78 group, n78 phones will probably work for them. There's a bit of a debate whether hardware support means band n77 or n78 appearing on a spec sheet, as parts of the US C-band fall within n78. Phone makers sometimes choose not to file for changes because they cost money they'd rather just make a newer model and sell that. If the hardware supports it but it doesn't yet have FCC approval, the phone's maker can file for a 'class 2 change' with the FCC, but they have to do it. Its hardware must support it, and it must be approved by the FCC to work on it. Those frequencies can't easily be combined with the frequencies the FCC just auctioned off, so it's likely that other bidders will be more interested in them.ДЇor a phone to support US C-band, it needs two components. In October, the government will auction off 100MHz more in the 3.45-3.55GHz range. But wait! There's another auction coming.
